Mike Carpenter tabbed to be the new

Westlake Head Wrestling Coach

Mike Carpenter has been selected, pending Board of Education approval, to be the next Head Wrestling Coach at Westlake High School succeeding Joe Heiland who stepped down after the season to concentrate on his family.  Coach Carpenter arrives in Westlake as both a highly accomplished competitor and coach.

Carpenter graduated from St. Edward’s where he was two time state placer and a 1986 OHSAA State Champion.  He is also a member of their Athletic Hall of Fame.  After high school, he went to wrestle for legendary coach Dan Gable at the University of Iowa.  He earned a varsity letter for the Hawkeyes in 1988.  After suffering a series of injuries, Coach Carpenter transferred back to Cleveland State University.  He set the single season win record in 1991 posting a 37-4 record and qualifying for the NCAA Division 1 National Championships.  He received both his Bachelor’s and Master degrees from Cleveland State.

He is no stranger to coaching.  For the past three seasons, he has been an assistant coach at St. Edward’s while his son Michael was competing for the Eagles.  Prior to that, he served as the Ford Middle School (Berea-Midpark) head coach for 2 seasons.  He also had another stint at St. Edward’s as well as serving as the Avon High School head coach from 1994-1998.  He got his start in coaching by assisting at Cleveland State after graduating from there.

Coach Carpenter and his wife, Kris, reside in Middleburg Heights.  Mike is a history teacher in the Berea-Midpark School District.  In addition to son Michael, who will be a freshmen at Baldwin-Wallace University this coming fall, he has a daughter, Hannah, at Kent State University and a daughter, Sarah, at Berea-Midpark High School.
