Westlake tabs Dan LaRocco as new Head Football Coach

Director of Athletics, Tony Cipollone, announced that Dan LaRocco will take over the reins of the Demon Football program, pending Board of Education approval.

“Through an extensive process, we came to the conclusion that we had the best candidate for this position right in our building.  Dan already has built a positive rapport  with players at various levels and has shown a willingness to be involved in all parts of our school community.  In addition, his colleagues and peers speak positively about his ability to reach athletes and get them to believe in a common goal,” Cipollone said.

Coach LaRocco came to Westlake last year and coached the offensive line.  Prior to arriving in Westlake, he had been the Head Football Coach at Western Reserve Academy.  He has also served as the Offensive Coordinator at University School, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, and Benedictine.  In all those stops, one of the characteristics that continually rose to attention was that the program went from a losing program to a winning program.  Coach “Rock” has also coached multiple sports. He was the Head Track Coach at both Copley High School and Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School (VASJ).  At Copley, his team finished 2nd in the Suburban League and had seven Regional Qualifiers. At VASJ, he was named as the 2012 New Herald Track Coach of the Year and his team was the OHSAA Division 3 State Runner-Up with 6 All Ohio athletes and 23 state qualifiers.  He also coached at Notre Dame College working with their throwers.

“I am very proud and humbled to be given this great responsibility and I intend to work as hard as possible in order to give our athletes the best experience possible playing football.  While we want as much success as possible, it is also about teaching life lessons that they can take with them in whatever paths they choose.  I look forward to working with all our players, no matter the skill level to make them feel like a family.  We intend to build a positive culture and get our community and school excited about Demon Football,” said LaRocco.

Dan is a graduate of Midpark High School, where he played on a Regional Quarter Final football team and was an All- Conference wrestler and thrower for the track team. He graduated from Baldwin Wallace College where he played on the 2003 team that lost in the Second Round of the NCAA Division 3 playoffs. He was also a letter-winner in Track.  He is married to Mary Griglak LaRocco, an All-American sprinter at Baldwin Wallace and a 2002 Olympian in Short Track Speed Skating.  They have a daughter, Alison (4).  He is a Health and Physical Education teacher at Westlake High School.
