Freshmen Conclude Regular Season with 13-4 Mark with 12-2 Win vs Bay

On a cooler Friday evening at the WHS diamond, the Demons put a tidy bow on the 2018 regular season with a mercy rule shortened 12-2 victory over their long-time rivals, the Bay Rockets. The Rockets could not find a way to exorcise Demon pitching. After scoring two times in the second, the Bay Villagers could advance only one runner to scoring position throughout the remainder of the contest.

The Horns jumped on top quickly with four tallies in the first frame, taking advantage of three free passes and three base hits, including a Jack Kerr two-bagger. The Demons scored in each inning after that and then Cam Lindstrom walked it off in the sixth with a double to right centerfield scoring Cal Reghi, who lead off the inning with a double to the same gap, to give the home team its 10 run cushion.

Offensively, ten of eleven Westlake batters making a plate appearance collected a safety. Kerr and Reghi had two base knocks each. Carlos Maldonado made his debut as a starter and chipped in with a walk and a run.

In a night of Demon debuts, Jack Finucane made his first pitching appearance as a high schooler. He started, pitched four innings and gained the victory allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four. Drew Mather followed Finucane to the hill and threw a scoreless fifth in three up, three down fashion. And lastly, the hurling stylings of Cam Lindstrom were on display to Demon fans for the first time this season. And all he did was strike out all three Bay hitters he faced before capping his evening with the walk off double. Nicely done gentlemen!

The web gem of the night was turned in by Charlie Zkiab. He made a diving catch of a looper, sliding face first across the RF chalk line. The cap, of course, did not stay in place. Charlie also added a triple to right center in the game.

Deneen was voted “fan of the game” just edging out six year old McKenna and Carl, who demanded a recount of the votes, whereupon it was discovered that Barb, in fact, did not vote for him. Awkward. Not sure how that ride home went. But thanks for the Twizzlers anyway Carl. Perhaps if you had treated the crowd to Snickers…just sayin’. It’s just difficult to compete with the giant software industry money that fuels Deneen’s campaign.

The SWC freshman baseball tournament is next. The second seeded Demons take on seven seed Midview at 4:30 on Tuesday at home. A win would bring a matchup with the victor of the Avon—Avon Lake 3/6 matchup. If you haven’t had a chance to watch these guys play yet, this is a great opportunity. Guaranteed fun and guess what? It’s still free. It would be awesome to see the entire Class of 2021 out for this game. JoJo gonna be there, maybe. Spread the word! See ya at the yard!
