Demons 9-2 Winners over N. Ridgeville; Finish 12-4 in SWC

In the SWC regular season finale the Demons completed a season sweep of the North Ridgeville Rangers with a 9-2 victory.

Taking advantage of a leadoff infield single in the first and a leadoff walk in the second, the Rangers scored single tallies in each frame to jump out to a 2-0 lead. And then crickets. Jacob Reidl, the starter, and Alex Needham in two innings of relief were able to pick up their defense by pitching around four errors and holding North Ridgeville scoreless in the final five innings. The Rangers had six base runners in scoring position in the remaining innings but clutch pitching and defense left them all stranded like the last customer at Mitchell’s who shows up five minutes after the doors are locked for the night. With the game still in doubt in the fourth inning, third sacker Sean Finucane made a charging short hop grab of a two bouncer and fired to first on the run to retire the final out of the inning and prevent the Rangers from tacking on their third run of the game.

In the third, the Demons were able to knot the game at two when Jack Kerr singled home Zach “Smiley” Regas and Cal Reghi singled home Kerr. And that opened the flood gates as the Horns delivered in each inning thereafter with two in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Offensive leaders were Kerr with two hits, including a triple to deep left centerfield, Reghi with two RBI, Collin Burrows with two hits, and the Finucane boys, Jack and Sean, with two hits apiece.

Reidl had his best outing on the mound this year going five innings and scattering four singles while only walking two Rangers resulting in one earned run. Needham came on in the fifth inheriting two runners. Just to make it interesting he dug the hole a little deeper by issuing a walk to the first hitter he faced, loading the bases. Then he retired the next three without allowing a run. In the seventh it was three up, three down and tarp the field.

Friday night the Demons play their regular season finale at home in a non-conference backyard brawl with Bay. It’s a 4:30 start. Come early so you don’t miss out on dollar gyro night (unconfirmed) courtesy of Zeno.

And this just announced on Twitter: your Demons are the second seed in the SWC freshman baseball tournament and will play the #7 seed Midview Middies at home on Tuesday at 4:30. The Demons won both regular season games with Midview by identical 3-2 scores. Should be a good one.

Here are the tournament seeds and records: #1 Amherst 13-1; #2 Westlake 12-4; #3 Avon 10-4; #4 Berea 9-4; #5 Olmsted Falls 8-8; #6 Avon Lake 4-6; #7 Midview 2-11; #8 Lakewood 1-10; #9 North Ridgeville 1-11. North Olmsted did not field a freshman squad this year. More SWC regular season games will be played this weekend but the tournament seedings and schedule are finalized.

So tonight and Tuesday — See ya at the yard!
