Westlake beat Avon Lake 57-52 in a thrilling game on the road tonight to advance to the second round of the tournament.
The Demons jumped out to a17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter as Justin Garcia hit two 3 pointers to kick start the offense.
The Shoreman fought back in the 2nd quarter with a 6-0 run in the first 2 minutes. Anthony Rego was in early foul trouble with 3 in the first half. Avon Lake took a 1 point lead into halftime 24-23.
The Demons came out ready to play in the second half as Dylan Bednar, playing one of his best games of the season, scored the first bucket. Avon Lake pulled ahead by 7 points, but Jacob May hit back to back 3 pointers with less than a minute left in the quarter to tie the game 38-38. Westlake ended the 3rd quarter with a 1 point lead.
Both teams continued to battle in the 4th quarter and Westlake lost 2 starters with Joey Geagea fouling out with 2 minutes left to play, shortly followed by Bednar. The Demons played tough defense to hold the Shoreman down the stretch. Garcia and Rego made key free throws with less than 16 seconds left to secure the victory.
Rego led the team in scoring with 17 points, followed by May with 12, Geagea 11, Bednar 10 and Garcia scored 7 points.
The Demons will play at Olmsted Falls on Saturday at 7pm.
